About Louise Bourgeois
French-born Artist and Sculptor
Lives and works in New York
Her works mainly focus on “relationships”
Inspiration from her childhood
My childhood has never lost its magic, it has never lost its mystery, and it has never lost its drama.”
About the work
Installation made in 1997
First exhibited in St Gallen, Switzerland
Made with mixed materials e.g. glass, wood, metal and cloth…
Metal fences surround different kind of things which we can find in our homes.
The metal fences made the boundaries between inside and outside transparent.
More personal and private things can be seen by the viewers.
The work reflected:
the artist’s childhood
relationship with her family
the feelings of home that the artist
felt.
Why installation?
aesthetically shaping the relationship of space and perceptual things
The viewers can have their own feelings in different positions in the work.
Questions
There are many chairs used in the work.
Do you think chairs can give you the feelings of home?
What are the other things that can replace the role of chairs in the work?
